On August 13, 2007 the newDr. Bob Kemp Centre for Hospice Palliative Care opened its doors (and home) to our first residential client. The need for such a facility in our community can be best summarized by the following quote:
“How lucky we are to have such a relaxing, refreshing place for our family members to get the support and comfort they need. Thank you to the staff who have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome. I don’t know how we would have managed without so many of Bob’s Angels to help us. This is truly Heaven’s waiting room.”
Hospice palliative care is one of the most life-affirming choices one can make with regard to their health care. Choosing Hospice is an individual saying: “I have decided to receive the best whole person care – body, mind and spirit – for both myself and my family. The choice is Hospice.”
Residential hospice is a house where caring lives. We are a dignified alternative to end of life that eases the worries of a person who is terminally ill. Operating a residential hospice that provides a comforting home environment (as well as 24 hour nursing care) is a very costly endeavor. While all services, including residential stays, are provided at no cost to our clients or their families, we are not funded by OHIP and must raise more than 60% of our budget through fundraising. Events such as the Pond Tour ensure we can continue to provide this much needed support.
McNally House opened its doors in April 2008. This free-standing, six suite, home-like residence provides, free of charge, 24-hour specialized palliative care to people living with a terminal illness, as well as those in their life circle.
The hospice is a non-profit organization serving the Niagara West communities of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln. McNally House is Ontario’s first rural teaching hospice.
Along with the highly skilled professional staff, McNally has 150 volunteers who give of their time and talents each week to help the residents and their families deal with life’s greatest challenges.
